Four and Five String Solid Body and Acoustic, bass guitars both fretted and fretless
Solid and acoustic bass guitars recreate the register and role of the double bass and dominate popular music. However, often four, five and especially six string bass guitars are often played slightly to radically different than double basses leaning away from the role of uprights and more towards a more guitar-like approach. The role of the double bass is (first) a rhythmic and (second) a harmonic accompaniment in ensemble and lead instrument only in solos.
